The singers of Brisbane City Opera are preparing or the production of their first fully staged opera, Bastien & Bastienne.
Brisbane City Opera is made up of current and former voice students from the Queensland Conservatorium. They will perform the Mozart opera from October 12- 15, at the Metro Arts Theatre on Edward Street.
Brisbane City Opera was founded in February 2014, when the group of classical voice students performed for the first time for residents at the Vela Nursing Home.
Since then the not-for-profit organization has gone from strength to strength, performing at weddings, corporate events and functions cross Brisbane - but their new production marks the first-time the group have performed a full opera together.
Director of Bastien & Bastienne and co-founder of Brisbane City Opera, Chris McNee, said: “Our goal is to make opera more accessible to people, and putting on this production of Bastien & Bastienne is an exciting step towards that. All our artists are fully trained in classical singing. We all have professional experience, and we want to give people the chance to come and see a high-quality opera for a fraction of the usual price.’’
Bastien & Bastienne is a one-act opera composed by Mozart when he was just 12-years-old. It’s the story of a shepherd and shepherdess who are deeply in love, but their happiness is shattered when Bastien is seduced away by another lover.
Distraught by Bastien’s infidelity Bastienne enlists the help of a travelling wizard to help win her love back. The opera will be performed in English.
General Admission $30, Groups of 8+ $25. ‘
